3. A Fog of War[]

Nearly a week has passed since Jason had been assigned to this particular mission. He knew of what to expect of the Maverick's work and of their questionable life expectancy but still had a ghastly ill wind of it inside his body, and a crappier one than the meeting he had with No. 1. For the last 24 hours, he couldn't bring himself to eat or sleep. Not even the effects of Instant Noodle Soup, Warm Beer, and Valium will bring him back from walking into the jaws of Hades, this time at least.

Jason was now sitting inside a flight pod of an Aerial Paratroop Vessel Deployer S-Type (for Single). It is one of the many technologies and vehicles developed and loaned by Barrett Standard Industries, one of the many members of a conglomerate headed by W. Lance Barrett. Right now, Jason would not have approved of Barrett's cruel method of dropping what are essentially coffins from the sky, but that isn't important considering the fact that there only a minute left until he arrives at the Amazon's island, probably somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Thankfully, the co-pilot's words of encouragement would soothe him a bit. Not much, but just a bit.

"Just breathe and be steady, it won't be long now until we're there."

Jason couldn't resist snarking back into the comm. "Breathe, fine. But how can I be steady when I'm diving into the unknown, ma'am?"

It felt like a long time until he was reminded by the pilot of his imminent deployment. "30 seconds until drop-off begins."

"Oh crap, better brace myself." Jason thought.

"10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Start deployment."

A loud pop emerged from Jason's sides as the pod ejected from the Deployer and started gliding down.

"Jason, are you receiving?"

Jason wasn't controlling the pod as the co-pilot was, but he still had access to the comms.

"Copy that."

It had come to a surprise that Jason found the descent pleasant despite expecting a rush of g-force... which he did.

While this happened, the pilot spotted what appeared to be strange black smoke. He directed his focus onto it. It seemed, that the smoke seems to be coming towards the deployer. Something has to be done or else the obstruction would hit the deployer. Quickly he told the co-pilot to start moving away while he keeps track of the pod and the smoke.

Then, something even stranger happened... The black smoke wasn't aiming for them, it was, aiming...

"Ja)_n, w&^*^ ------ bla%&^ _oke-"

"What's that? You're breaking up, ca-"

But before Jason could reply any further, darkness engulfed him and the pod, and he too spoke no more.
